Thanks to Cameron for co-writing and providing the vocal! www.soundclick.com/bands/8/objecksmusic.htmTen bonus points and a complimentary drink at the Ice Club to the first person who can identify the Beatles song that provided the basis for the percussion. (Not ENTIRELY obvious, since I modified it extensively.) Charlie PS - I tried to do an html link to Cameron's page under the "song information" section of my Soundclick music page, but apparently Soundclick doesn't allow that anymore -- got an error message.

Wow hey!! What a pleasant surprise! Like the final touches in the purcussion expecially in the ending! Such a different approach to the mix then I would have taken in parts but really good, and a nice change!
Thanks to charlie for inviting me to take this opportunity to do this callaboration. A good experience writing words and half a melody to an arrangment that I didnt even play on. A different craft in its own.
Yep I helped write it and I dont even know which beatles tune he's talking about?

... Such a different approach to the mix then I would have taken in parts ... Hey Cameron! Interesting comment! -- For me, mixing is largely a trial and error kind of thing. I move the pans and volumes around until I get a mix that I like. My main concerns are balancing the volume between left and right and finding space for each instrument (especially those that are fighting for the same frequency range). EQ and reverb, which I use sparingly, are usually last minute tweaks. For "Almost Winter" I did three mixes to mp3 before settling upon the one I posted. The three mixes were essentially identical with some minor tweaking of lead guitar and vocals. Out of curiosity and the opportunity to learn, how would you have approached the mix? Charlie PS - glad you liked the changes to the percussion track!

Hey well I would have turned my vocal UP. But I like your approach. The vocals are fairly intenense in parts and might get real loud as a result of having the vocal louder in the mix. Also your approach gave it this kind of misty lonley kind of feeling that really fits the kind of song it is. But still allows some of the Intensity to come through, Where my mix might of sounded too 'Angry' Cause I tend to take a vocal like that and make it well heard in the mix. But I think would make it too intense for a song like this. I also tend to have the drums not quite so loud but this song have a real intresting Percussion track so I like it where you did it.
Mostly Im like you and fiddle till I find a spot that I like. Dont have any clue about Dbs. and what not.

Hey Matt!
Yeah, the percussion is a midi file I created and ran through the PS5 tone generator. Anvil (my midi software) calls the sounds I used low conga, mute high conga, open high conga, high bongo, low bongo, claves, and cabasa.* Then there are the standard bass drum, snare, various toms, and various cymbals.
I can e-mail the midi file to you if you're curious.
Charlie
* HINT! -- Most of these are in the original Beatles song!

Hey Matt!
Did you see my first post on this thread? When writing the percussion track for "Almost Winter," I started with part of the percussion track for a certain Beatles song, then added to it quite extensively.

Does anyone else think this sounds like Wham!? I think the only change I'd make in the mix would be to bring the rhythm guitar back just a tiny bit, but that's a very minor quibble. Great job you two. I suspect Cam will be a collab monster now. ps - And I Love Her.

Hey Mike! [glow=LimeGreen,2,300]We have a winner!!! ;D[/glow] "And I Love Her" it is! Hmmm, Wham!? The only song by them that I know is "Wake Me Up...", and it is very upbeat. I see that Wham! has three albums on Rhapsody. I'll listen to a few songs to see if I can hear the similarity. Any song in particular? I'll experiment with slightly softer rhythm guitar and see how it sounds. Thanks for the suggestion! I'll also experiment with bringing the vocal up a bit as Cameron suggested (actually I'll bring everything else down a bit -- I already had the vocal track at max volume). It was great working with Cameron! He contributed lots of enthusiasm in addition to his excellent vocal track! Charlie PS - Does this mean I have to change the subject heading to " 'Almost Winter' almost finished "?

I have uploaded a new mix. I lowered the volume of everything except vocal and lead guitar during the solo section. I further lowered the rhythm guitar just a bit.
What do you think? Can you tell that I've changed anything?
Thanks for the suggestions!
