Looking for feed back on the sound and mixing.. any tips to clean stuff up are welcome, and if someone wishes to play with mixing it better, I'd be glad to hear it.. No need to go easy on a Noob.. hey spike, i know this song well i sing it myself often.. (I guess everybody does)
any particular points you wanted comments on? us folks could pick apart a beatles album (ok i could but mike would NEVER)
in general i like it, is that the ps5 for a rythm bassdrum pedal you got there? only obvious problem i hear is a vocal peak where you get a little clipping.. keep em coming
the guitar has a distant sound to it even though you obviously plugged right in? some reverb on the ps5?

Hi Spike,
You seem to have part of the problem I do with vocals. If you have a compressor for your vocals I would use it. Also, make sure your vocal signal is coming into the PS5 strong w/o any clipping. Since I have a cheap preamp I compress and then experiment with the mic just to see at what point the PS5 red-light comes on, and then back off just a bit so that you get the strongest signal without any clipping. You don't need to sing loud, but your mic does need to bring the signal in loud and clean.
You can also use the line-out from a practice amp (instead of a preamp) but I am too embarrased that my neighbors will hear. It is better to have the vocals strong when mixing so that if you do have to bounce later you won't run into any problems with vocal clarity later.
I'm sure there are numerous ways to record vocals, and this group has different approaches.
Otherwise, a great first try. Stan

lets see.. comments on anything are welcome.. arrangement, my lack of musical ability, mixing.. etc.. I started with this song cause it was easy to program into the PS5.... The bass and drums are a ps5 track. I have a 12 string Acous/Elec direct in on tracks 1/2 with some stereo effects, and reverb is set to 100. It didn't cut through so much on the head phones, but after listening to it today at work, I'm gonna re-mix it again The vocals seem to have blown out during recording, the breaking up in the loud sections is apparant at any volume level. I used the best mic I have, but it is a generic radio shack one. The vocals were pretty much my 1st attempt at not singing under my breath while I play, so I figure I was too close to mic or something like that.. *shrug* The Elec w/ Distortion is out of the box ps5 heavy2 effect.

That vocal track was done seperately, and I'm sure I was too close to mic while belting it out.. I think I even had my eyes closed Spike

I agree with Stan and Matt - it's easy enough to listen back to the vocals while you're doing it and try another take. It may be the mic, it may not. Except for the vocals distorting in the middle, it's not a bad first attempt. Certainly if you keep at it, you will see improvements. My first attempt with the PS5 was pretty lame, but it's easy enough to get the hang of it. Listen to this song again in six months. We've all been there.
I'm adding your Soundclick link to the list, BTW.

Posted a re-mix, trying to cut back the 12 string from coming through so loud, tried to nestle the vocals in better. I'll re-record the vocals sometime over the weekend to elim. the blow-out
Hoping to see if re-mix is better..

I'm trying to give the version acoustic feel until after the 2nd verse, then from the break and following verses trying to get it rocking, then back to acoustic/rock for the last verse and ending.. I think this time, I almost got it.. I can tell I need to invest in some monitor speakers for mixing, and luckily the wife really likes this hobby, and is wanting to buy me better mics etc.. so I can get those approved through the budget process Spike

Thanks Holzra.. and thanks for link Carp.. I re-recorded the vocals, dug out the mic stand this time, and I think I got a better track with much less 'user error' Spike
