Hi all!! My first PS5 song ever is now on Soundclick. And actually its the first song i've ever recorded, mixed, etc. I decided to do a cover tune so I could focus on using the gear instead of writing. Everyone on here gives great feedback so I'm hoping for the same. The vocals suck so telling me to sing on key would be obvious Please feel free to give any and all constructive criticism that comes to mind. I'm very interested especially on comments re: the mix. I've listed my gear so you can read what I used to record. Thanks everyone! www.soundclick.com/bands/3/mattdawson.htm ;D

Not bad at all for a first effort, not bad at all. The choppy guitar is a bit too choppy for my taste, but it's not a serious disaster. How did you do the rhythm track? Looking forward to hearing more - keep it up! Welcome to the madness that is recording and mixing.
ps - I'm adding your link to our list of Soundclick artists.

holzra/mike, thanks for checking out the tune. re: panning. i only panned slightly. i think mixing with headphones probably did me in. i have some monitor speakers now that'll help with me panning better. everything was all dead center and muddy so i panned it out til i heard some separation. i'll go further next time around and see how it sounds. i think my inexperience had me paranoid about separating things out with a hard pan. like having all the acoustic on one side and just e-bow on the other. it just didn't seem right. as far as the rhythm track, i was heavy on the left hand muting i guess. even though i was covering this song, i really didn't have any info other than basic chord changes. so alot of the parts (including the short solo and all the e-bow) are my ideas. in retrospect i agree that the rhythm is too choppy and doesn't quite fit it with the other parts. thanks for adding the link! ah...i love feedback, must be some kind of weird thing from my private school days...

so matt, how long have you been using the e-bow? have thought about one for a long time but wasn't sure of the ease of use for this old fart . . . .

i've had the ebow for a couple years but hardly use it. its pretty easy to use...its just kinda sensitive. switching between strings is the hard part and takes practice. most ebow lines that i've seen tabbed out are all on one string. i guess there aren't too many masters out there. i got it because its a cool, unique tone that i think adds a neat layer and atmosphere to a song. i'm not sure what kinda music you like but some ebow users that come to mind are the edge (U2), REM, Collective Soul, Dandy Warhols, and just about anyone who's played for David Bowie.

Hi Matt,
Much better first song than most of us. I like your uniqueness and fitting the mood with your vocals.
Keep em coming. Stan

hey matt. thanks for the vocal encouragement. i am am a big fan of velvet underground and sweet lou. i never would've thought about it (i haven't listened to any velvet or lou in a long time) but now that you mention it, i kinda hear it too. that's funny. as far as recording goes. everything was DI'ed, baby. the acoustic, electric. the vocals were done w/ the headphone mic cuz i don't have a preamp for my shure sm57 yet. my amp is made by the company that makes the "sansamp" D.I. box. the amp has a built in sansamp that made it so easy to record. i used a zoom delay on the ebow. korg for chorus, echo on the arrpeggios. korg again for tremolo and delay on the opening chords. the acoustic just got run thru a zoom unit for some reverb and compression. the band's site is: www.overtherhine.comactually, they used to be a band. now they're like a husband/wife songwriting team. they've mellowed out but still write great tune and really great lyrics. so matt, if you like intelligent music (and we crowded house fans do...), then i think you'll dig 'em. i think they're best albums are "eve" and "good dog, bad dog". thanks for the nice words, stan. i appreciate it. i tried to read as much as i could on recording before i did it. and it took a zillion attempts on some tracks! but whew, its done and now to move on to recording some of my own ideas!

yeeeeaa... great! lou! lou! lou! yea i tried the tech21 amp trademark 60 right? nice for solid state.. i did NOT know it had built in sansamp capability though which is another product i've eyed for many a long day. interesting.. (hold me back roger!) but ive got some mics so i better keep on learnin how to use em. well we can expect good things from you im sure. i think listening and growing up with good songwriters/ authors/ music is bound to have some influence (holding my breath)

you got the amp right! trademark 60 it is. i got a great deal on it in '98. it made it the best bang for the buck. hey, i'm holding my breath too, waiting for all those influences to gel....
