ButterflyPut a lot of effort into arrangement, contrast, and trying to capture energy in a away that i might be able to replicate. Also trying to find a style of voice that i can reuse as a signature style. Tall orders! At the beginning of the song I was thinking about syncronicity by the police but it sounds more like gary numan and cars! doh...anyhow let us know what you think. Mike and Cam, i had you on either shoulder as i was recording, so i hope you are content, however your critique is always invited and always applied...well i try! Rob

Well, since you asked... Actually, I like it. It's a good, tight, self-contained little bundle, and I don't hear too much wrong with it. Production & arrangement are clear, tempo is snappy but not rushed, nice feel all around. I hear what you're saying about Gary Numan - it's got some of that 80's groove to it, but nothing wrong with that. The only tiny suggestion I'd make (you knew I've have one, didn't you?), would be to examine the EQ settings of the voice and guitar - Is there some overlap between 3-5K or so? I'd cut the guitar slightly in that area, and boost the vocal at the same frequency. The vocal is a little hard to hear behind the guitar, but rather than just start pumping up volumes, cutting the guitar and boosting the vocal in the same frequency range will do it cleaner. Other than that little comment, it's a winner!

EQ. funny. i started changing the settings aimlessly hoping that things would turn out alright but ended up with this!
Let me understand what your saying: 1) Cut the guitar means keep the frequency but reduce the power? 2)boost the vocal in same frequency...yep i can do that.
Hey, thanks for the advice...again! ;D

Hey,
Good job man! I really like the guitars its well very different and it reminds me of the cars ;D. I think the drums are a little loud, they seem a little seperate if that makes sense I think Id turn up the Guitar and vocal up little more or turn the drums down abit(Imo)
The vocal was pretty good, seemed a little pitchy in the verse there, it wasnt ear cringing bad or anything, just slight flat notes in some of the desending vocal lines there!
Great job Cameron

Yes, this is known as 'stacking' frequencies. Instead of just turning everything up, you create little 'holes' for various sounds. One of the best uses of this is to cut the bass guitar around 30-40Hz (way down at the bottom). This makes room for the kick drum, and the two instruments don't make the bottom all muddy by booming at the same range. Vocals and guitars tend to have the most power in the 3-5KHz range, so stacking the frequencies there allows you to keep them from literally making your ears tired by competing for the same space. It lets you keep the overall volumes much more in check.

Mike...Ahh...stacking...i think i understand....very interesting....(now i have to wait all day before i can go home and try this...!!! want to go home now!!)
Cam, you're absolutely right about the vocals and the drums. I will sort them out tonight. I mixed and recorded and was happy on the headphones...and then just before i went to bed lastnight i remixed with higher drums at the last minute...dont know what possessed me...and the vocals sounded alright on the night but now i listen to them on the computer..i agree...
Thanks both of ya!

Mike, Cam, Tried to fix by eq-uing, but quickly gave up and re-recorded. Glad you made me revisit it, im much happier with it. i think i might be proud of this. Vocals are less strange and i did stack the frequencies for the rhythm guitar and vocals, but decided to put the second guitar in a frequency of its own and made it really bright. i like it. thanks for the input lads. there is no way i could have produced this sort of quality if i had not found this site, in fact there is no doubt in my mind that i would still be fumbling around with the volume control now if i hadnt found you. thanks rob

This is great, good job! your voice reminds me of axl rose and a mixture of something else. Rob ever thought about taking voice lessons? I think you voice could improve remarkably! You got a nice sort of late 80 vibe to it but with a new sort of flavour added. The track is sounding 10 times better, the ending wow what a change! I love it! Great redo!
Did you change the ending? I dont recall.

actually i took a lesson in malaysia when i was working out there, and the lad was chinese so he tried to teach me in chinese !! it was leally leally ...i mean really really funny!! i gave up after that ...(no offence to anyone) actually he summarised the whole breathing thing for me on one piece of paper which i absorbed ..i guess...but i think i shall let the voice get there on its own for now...all this practice im getting these days fits my schedule...got lots of recording in me which takes up all my free time...the rest is spent at work...and err drinking ....and playing soccer...and ..well anyhow..! i rerecorded most of it and eq-ued what i didnt. the ending is sharply cut, and neatened. glad you like it, i think its a big improvement, so big thanks for being honest with your critique. hey thanks for the axl comparison! not sure if i believe it but i leally leally rike the idea!!!
