I posted the mix of "Taxman" by the Beatles ( like you needed me to tell you that ), covered by a few PS5UG buddies. The file is posted to my ps5 site listed in my sig. below. For those low-bandwidth folks there is a quicktime version @ 24kbps
The lineup is:
Rob - vocals Stan - guitars John - bass & BIAB drums

John - pretty interesting version! Good idea to use a .mov file for streaming. It seemed very clear; how does it compare in quality to the other file in terms of compression, clarity, etc.

Thanks Mike. If I was going to do a cover, I wanted to change up the 'feel' so it wasn't just a copy of the original.
As far as the compression, it loses some of the high end quality first, to my ears. The first thing to suffer is the cymbals and guitar. They get that "underwater" effect. Suprisingly, the low end stays pretty much intact when compared to other compression types (realplayer).
The 128Kbps MP3 file was 2.2 megs and a data transfer rate of 15.5 bytes/sec. The Quicktime file , using Qdesign Music 2 compression (stereo,22.05khz, 16bits) @ 24kbps , came in at just under 420K ! Less than 1/4 the original size , but you wouldn't know it from the sound quality. The overall data rate was 2.9 bytes/sec, well within dial-up range.
So I guess you had no trouble with that file streaming to your player. How long did it take before the file started playing back ?

It was pretty 'instant'. Even faster than the streaming audio at Soundclick. I did have some latency problems towards the end, but it's probably my computer. Overall the sound was much more like downloading an mp3.
As far as the song, it was a surprise to hear it so differently, but it was exciting and moved right along. And of course, the bass lines were great!

John,
I have two 2-minute digital video clips from last Saturday's Funstock.
How can I put those up for others to stream, so they don't have to download them (they're 22+ Mb apiece). They are presently in AVI format and are viewable using Windows Media Player.
What advice can you give.

Scott, It's been a while since I've messed around with video on my Mac.... It's now 5 years old and starting to show it's age with such tasks However, when I was loading video onto a web page I always used Quicktime Pro ( it's basically quicktime with features that are "unlocked" for about $30, payable to Apple of course ) Quicktime can handle AVI files with no problem and you could easily convert the file to just about any format you wanted to use and pick the level of compression. I found in the past that using the Sorenson compressor included with QTpro and setting frame rates to around 12-15 frames sec gave excellent results. You should also think about keeping the overall size of the movie to 240*240 if you think dial-upers will be checking it out. If you aren't into buying/learning quicktime I used to have a piece of software that created REALPlayer files and it was very simple to use. There used to be a link on their page but I am not sure if they still offer it, but I'm sure they must or there wouldn't be any support for their format ;D John hmm, my spidey senses tell me Mike may move this sub thread over to gizmos and gadgets
