This is a song about change, about loss, and about moving on. It's also the song I was working on when the TG went out of sync, and had to wind up doing it all over again! And Mike, this is the one that used the workflow I set up in the admittedly short "The Path". Oh, and the official "Yes, it does sound like" advisory...where the main body of the song revolves around an Emin9 and an A7, it does have that "signature" sound in the beginning....hopefully as it progresses, it'll distinguish itself as something unique which just happens to work with those 2 chords! www.soundclick.com/bands/6/ballsagainstthewallmusic.htm(Thanks for reminding me to add the URL Mike!)

Overall a really tight recording; the mix seems very well balanced, all the parts work well together, etc. Even tho it does sound like you-know-who, it's a well-made homage to their sound. I like the vocal in the verses, but it seems to be working a bit harder in the choruses. Just the opposite of the last song? Still I wish that was my biggest problem these days. Otherwise, a fine recording.

Thanks Mike - as much as I feel I'm progressing and actually getting more out of the PS5 with each project, my Achilles Heel will always be vocals. I've hidden behind singers (like Al) for so long, it's scary when there's no one between me and the microphone! Thanks for the kind words about the song - my wife says it's the best so far.

Wow, great mix! As I listen, I can picture every instrument up on a stage and can clearly hear the contribution of each.
I really like the lead solo.

Thank you Jim - I did try to balance the mix very carefully, especially before doing the one bounce I had to do. I'm flattered about the lead guitar comment - I'm quite comfortable on the bass (where I've been hiding for decades now), but this lead guitar stuff is something the guitar players have always done. Luckily, my Strat has a lot of patience with me as I fumble along!

nice one pink , i mean bob! it really is a great mix and definitely one of your best singing forays. i really appreciate your approach to your songs itr reminds me very much of my buddy ross' music (might be an age thing hes close to you i think)

Thanks matt - well, if my age is showing, I guess that isn't a bad thing after all....look at the likes of Daltrey and Townshend, Knopfler, and the ever energetic McCartney! I'll be hitting the big 50 this year, and I guess the music that inspired me as a rug rat is evident by what I try and do. Thanks for the nice comments - I keep trying to stretch a bit further as I go on.

I have to agree that the mix was fantastic, and really good overall song production.
Did you interlace two lead guitar parts. I was hearing a lead with excellent sustain, and one that took off right after the other paused. Or, maybe it is just late at night and I'm hearing things.

Wow - thank you very much Peter, Roger, and Stan! To answer your question Stan, no it was one lead part - I think the part you're referring to is where it carries from the verse into the chorus. I added a third chorus verse at the end in order to leave room for the lead. The sustain was through the Marshall overdrive channel, gain @ 25% and volume @ 75% (thank God for the line out!). I also set a lot of reverb on both the lead and thythm tracks. The rhythm was doubled per Mike's essay on doubling a part with a slight delay, and then I tweaked the pattern to raise the organ level (keeping it panned center), and used a Jazz Guitar for the second instrument. I panned the Jazz Guitar to the right channel, and lowered the level so the arpeggios it was playing would blend with the delayed rhythm on the right side. The fretless bass and the (gulp) vocals rounded out the rest. I first did just the rhythm and bass against the pattern, then bounced the two rhythm and one bass track to tracks 1 & 2. Vocals up next on 3, and finally the lead on 4. The new headphones I'm using (Sennheiser 497's) helped the mix because of their superior clarity. No effects added in the computer at all - just did a fade in on the single bar of the intro, and then a fade out at the end. Recorded the lead all the way through (a few takes!), and just worked the fader up and down as I fed the line out to the computer as was appropriate for levels. Oops - didn't mean to create an essay here - just going through the process that I used. Thanks again guys!
