Roger, I really like your lyrics on both of this songs. You are quite a songwritter. You also have a very strong vocal presense that conveys the message very well. Small Bus Station: Sounds like a "Heaven" acoustic guitar setting. I almost felt like I was listening to Dylan lyrics because they were so detailed. I could have made 2 songs out of those verse. Right Woman Wrong Time: Also very good lyrics and the acoustic guitar sounds miced with a condenser. Very good quality in the tone. It was really great getting to hear some of your postings again. I would think about putting a good drum pattern to "Small Bus Station" which could really bring the listener in and out of your mood of the verses, not to mention lots of room to pick it up in spots. Great songs. Stan

thanks stan for the kind words . . . small bus station was just something that i have had sitting around for a while that i picked up (yeah, dylanesque) and plugged into the ps5 . . . . i think it was actually a muddy 12 string . . . . vocals need a lot of work . . . .
the words right woman wrong time came to me a few days ago and the rest is history . . . . yeah, i mic'd the taylor 310ce with a rode nt-1a through a preamp into the ps5 . . . . i think this one is a fun song, further development to come . . . .
once again, thanks for the kind words . . . . .

you have the gift of getting across that magical place between your feelings and thoughts to the lyric. i was laughing at stans comment about getting 2 songs outta those verses..having a hard time writing anything of substance myself.

Two really nice pieces, Roger - each distinctive in their own right. Good stories set to good music - it'll be a pleasure to hear these as you develop them into the final songs that they'll become. And the sound you got with the condenser makes me think I should leave the Ovation unplugged, and play with mic placement instead!

Roger, I am just now starting to mic some acoustic parts with my new mic, and once I silence out the beginning where it is picking up a bunch of air and unwanted noise, and tweak the EQ; specifically bring up the mid-range, it really does make a drastic improvement over just doing a line-in with my acoutic guitar's Fishman pickup.

Small bus station: great lyrics.. really gets a story out there. Thought you could have had a touch more bass range on the guitar. vocals were pretty well balanced throughout..
Right woman: another good one. good balance. Like the dual vocals. guitar tone sounds better in this one.
just my $.02
should really pop when fully done..

As I've mentioned many times before, the point of a demo is to give you a simple, yet concise vision of the song. If you listen to demos of famous songs, it's easy to see how the final version unfolded from the roughness of the beginning. Here we see from Roger two textbook examples of how this is supposed to work. You can quite easily hear the finished songs in your head from the simple, straightforward directness of these two songs. Both stripped-down, but astonishingly full in their content, lyrical and musical. Very good work. In a better world, Roger would be famous and wealthy, and we would all be giving our eye teeth to write material like this. But in the real world, only the latter is true.
Rog- sorry it's taken me so long to get around to these.

what very kind words, mike, and greatly (you don't know how much!) appreciated . . . . as i said, lyrics have been coming to me lately, and i am trying (like you once suggested) to tell a story in the songs, hopefully i am actually doing it . . . . your opinion is always valued, as is everyones . . . . thanks

i wrote this weeks ago, and saved it in my draft box to finish it later...no time....so ill just post it now unfinished....unlike my songs! which if anyone has noticed, has been no existant this year. tut tut, maybe ill squeeze one in before the end of the year. anyway, roger, the main thing i wanted to say about these tunes is that your songwriting needs no further development in my opinion. but what i did notice is that your voice can be fantastic or ordinary. i dont know how you are going to access the fantastic part, but i hightlighted the areas that im talking about below:
songwirting is fab. its hard to start commenting on anything else...cos youve noted that these are rough cuts...but i guess like a few if us...its the song writing craft that you're working on....thing is that this is a great example of your craft...and to be honest...there isnt much more you can do with this part....the most important thing you have to do is recognise that this is what youve been trying to achieve..the next step is to get a great recording......i wouldnt change this song at all...not one note...or word...but i would encourage you rerecord....add tracks etc.... holz+smallbusstation.mp3 2.00-300 i thought i noticed the vocal was more relaxed...like at the end of the song, and i found that very pleasing to the ear..

rob, thanks for the comments . . . you are absolutley correct, i am much more involved in the process of WRITING the song then recording it . . . i do think i am on the w=right track as far as telling a story and definitely agree with those areas where i can let the voice just feel "comfortable" other than forcing it. . . . thank you SO VERY MUCH for the comments . . . . i need to hear some robbo songs, i know they are there, post "em!!!

Listened to 3. They're some pretty nice songs, and it's pretty impressive sound quality you're getting on the P5.
