Al has finally made it over to do some vocal tracks, and brought along the lyric he penned for the intrumental I'd been calling "Autumn Light". Just completed a mix this morning, and posted it up on SoundClick : www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=138556I've scrapped the previous leads from the instrumental version, and added two new ones this morning. I went for a very subtle, supportive line, and used the new Les Paul. The mahogany top on the mahogany body does give it a nice warm tone. A touch of reverb in the clean channel on the Marshall, no other FX used on the leads at all. Later today, I should be mixing and then updating Thunder on the page, which also has a new (Al) vocal as well.

Bob, I listened to these 2 songs last night. "Saved By The Bell", your newest one, was a "mellow" song which reminded me a little bit of 3-Dog-Night's "Easy To Be Hard." I really liked the feeling both vocally & instrumentally.
"Thunder," sounds pretty close to production quality, and was well constructed with an excellent mix. I did notice a couple of slight sync problems. One case was on the bass somewhere between the middle & end of the track.
BTW: the bass really sounds cool in this!!

Hiya Stan, Thanks for the listen! If there is a sync problem in there, it must have occurred in the transition to MP3 - there aren't any sync errors in the 2488 playback, or in the CD I cooked up to listen to in the car. There is a spot in the bass track, in the last verse section where I take a lead on the bass - I started going so fast I got ahead of myself, and then had to pause for a fraction of a second in order to hit the "E" on the money. That may be what sounds like a sync error perhaps. When i gave it the "car listen" I noticed that Al's vocal is a tad too upfront in Thunder, especially in the very beginning. I kicked up the EQ at 3.4K in order to bring him out of the mix, and I think I went a tad too far. I'll adjust that and make an updated MP3 to send up to SoundClick. I remember "Easy to be Hard", and you're right - a mellow, jazzy, kinda bluesy feel. I've got a good old 12 bar blues in the works right now, and with the rhythm done on the new Les Paul, it sounds almost "creamy" - the Rhythm pickup on that is nice and warm. I'm going to have to break down, make a New Year's resolution, and actually learn how to play guitar next year!

Bob, I'm with you on practicing that guitar. With all of this time spent writing, recording, mixing... I don't find much time to sit down, strum, and maybe try to learn some new things. Effects, mics, & tones have replaced just sitting down and playing a guitar for 2 straight hrs. That is the only way I know to get any better at it, and also strengthen your fingers (guess a bass player has a lot of that already) I've heard where some really good guitar players practice close to 10 hrs. a day!!! Wow - I don't get to play 10 hours in a week, much less in a day! I do need to play more often, and also to go through the learning curve. I can play a rhythm here and there, but I need to expand my horizons with lead instead of just hacking along as I've been doing. I'm going to work with the pentatonic scales - my objective is to be as comfortable with them as I am on the bass neck. Those two extra strings make all the difference in the world!

Funny how you never hear songs like this anymore. But to anyone of our age, especially if you've been in a bar band, tunes like there are bread and butter to the ears. Good mix, good vocal (as usual Al), and just a fine thing overall. I'm listening in lo-fi, so it's hard to hear if there's anything odd in the mix, but I'll wager not much. What kind of mic is Al using here?

Al is using our MXR 990 for the vocals - Marshall Instruments (Not Jim Marshall's distinctive stacks) microphones have to be one of the best values for the studio I've seen. It's available at Musician's Friend for $69.99 generally, and oft times goes on sale for $49.99 (when I bought this one, it not only cost $49.99, but they also tossed in a free Pop filter with gooseneck and clamp for the mic stand). I run this mic through the Behringer Tube Ultragain Mic200 preamp for a touch of warmth, and then right into the 2488.
