When Ed and family were up visiting in December, he mentioned that he'd written a song as a gift for his wife Cindy. It was the first new song he'd written in a long time, and I asked him if he'd like to get a version down while he was in the area. This was a departure from our usual process, as we really didn't have the time to create a drum track first, then layer tracks as we usually do. Ed came over and first put down the guitar track (using the Ovation), and then did a total of three takes for the vocal. The challenge to me was to then finish this up - Ed left it to me to decide how to finish it off. I wound up using the percussion voices on the keyboard and playing "live" against his guitar track. I then used the fretless acoustic bass to compliment the Ovation sound for the bass track. Finally, I added his previous two vocal takes in the choruses as "backing voices" against his selected final lead vocal track. The resulting mix actually sounds a lot like we did live way back when It's called "Cindy's Song", and it's at the top of the list on our Soundclick page : www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=138556Hope you enjoy! Bob

Bob. Enjoyable tune with some nice snapiness at the chorus. Looking at this strictly from a musical point-of-view I can see this spawning off in several different directions. My personal pref. might be an EVH-like style similar to what they did with "Pretty Woman." Dug those bass lines once again, and the song's personal-simplicity of the lyrics helps the listener I.D. with the song.

Hi Bob
Nice track buddy, I like the melody alot and the rhyming scheme...
Some harmonies would be nice for sure... The productions seems alright, as far as I can tell on this horrible comp. I'm on lol... what is this recorded on anyway?
Good job guys! Cameron

Hi Guys, Thanks for the feedback, both from Ed and myself. Stan, I do see where this could branch out (a la the EVH Pretty Woman feel), but I kinda like the immediacy of it. It reminds me of the old practice in the basement days, when we'd run through a new tune a couple of times, and then suddenly it would all just fall together. Cam, this was done on my 2488. Vocals using the MXR 990 mic, through the Behringer Tube Ultragain Mic200 pre, then straight in, guitar (Ovation Celebrity Deluxe) straight in, and bass (Michael Kelly fretless acoustic) through a Behringer Ultra DI and straight in from there. Drums (and I use this term very loosely) played "live" (four whole fingers worth) on a Casio keyboard straight in to the 2488. Thanks again guys! Bob

Bob, You better watch it... I have this tendency to try & sneak in mayo on an already mustered-down-burger. I get kick out of the kitchen every now & then, for adding experimental spices to the skillet when no one's looking.

Oh, I won't even get into things in the kitchen here... ...but there is a good book called "Guerrilla Home Recording - How To Get Great Sound From Any Studio" that has good ideas and techniques on how to maximize the quality of just about any gear you may have lying around. Using the keys for drums on this tune would fit the spirit of this book pretty well. If it works, it's valid

I've used the 2488 patterns quite a bit over the last year actually - well, since I got the 2488 last March anyway. I just recently picked up an Alesis SR-16 to improve on drum tracks (to "humanize" them a bit more), and just last week found out that our drummer Steve wants to get into the act. He's going to set up a remote 8 track setup at his house, just to do drum tracks. I'll then take his tracks and add them onto the 2488, so our drums will soon be VERY humanized

Bob, you are a lucky man indeed! I know two drummers that could produce some really excellent tracks, but unfortunately both of their homes are quickly filling up with kids & babies, so recording at home is literally impossible. One drummer has been recording for a long time but is now trapped in an over-committed life-style (know any of those types. ;D)The other is a great drummer & keyboardist but has almost quit music altogether, not to mention he has no recording equipment or place to record. I can wait to here some of your mixes with the live drums.
