I quickly wrote & recorded vocals on this yesterday. I know there are some ruff edges, and will probably do vocals over at some point. Just wanted to see if I could get some opinions on construction and flow. www.hisholyspace.com/stangulleyor its on my SC site link below. Thanks, Stan

Stan,
I like the structure of the chords and melody. It seems to go slightly out of beat around 1:50-2:00, but it can probably be tightened up later. The guitar also sort of takes off on its own around 3:40 or so. Overall I think it's a good solid foundation. Rein in the guitar somewhat, smooth off the rough edges and get a good mix. Sounds like you're in good shape otherwise.

Stan,
The rough edges aren't all that rough for a quickly done recording. The background guitars are nicely subdued and balanced -- you might recall I don't like too much going on to distract the listener from the message in the vocal. Vocal sounds good voice wise -- but maybe want to do a retake to improve the phrasing. I also think this would be a good one to try adding some interesting complimentary background vocals during the choruses. I assume that the 2488 leaves enough of spare tracks to play around with that.
I would go with a different tone of the guitar during the solo parts. Its too thin now IMO. Distortion is fine, but think a bigger (fuller, rounder,) tone would give it prominance it deserves. Don't know it could be beefed up enough with EQ ir insert effects, or would need a retake with differently adjusted guitar input effects.
Best Regards, Tom

Thanks Mike and Tom on your suggestions.
I had a little more time today to do some slight EQing and remastering but probably will hold off on redoing the vocals right now. I have my hands full setting up a CD Baby web shop. My CDs were FedExpressed last night but we were at my son's graduation so I missed the pickup. They should be arriving again sometime today.
Meanwhile, I'm going to replan a revised version of this at some later date.
As always, Thanks for your help. Stan

A friend named Frank at the Sound Advice forum was kind enough to generate a drum track for this. I really like what he did, and it changes the whole complexion of the song.

Yes, it certainly does! It's grabbed this song by the scruff of its neck and given it a good shake. A lot of the previously mentioned rough edges are pretty smooth now. I'd bring the snare down just a slight touch, since it tends to overpower everything in its path (but not enough to quell its mighty beat). I'd be interested to know what Frank used for this. The track is good, and it makes what you've done sound even better. Do you still think the vocal needs redone now? I'm not so sure.

Well the vocals are a touchy thing with me as you know, and it could start heading in the opposite direction of where I wanted to go, but sure I might give them another spin to see if they can be improved.
Frank used GS2 (groove sampler) bundled with Sonor 6 to do this. How he did it I don't know but it sounds pretty amazing to me. Since this was basically an MP3 I sent him w/o the drum track in it, the sound quality also impressed me.
P.S. -- I hear that Sonar 6 comes with some unbelivable tools. Don't think the wife is going to let me buy it though.

Hey Stan
Really cool groove you put on this, everything is jamming really nicely... I agree with Tom I think you could get phrasing better. It's funny I think it might be a bit too singy. If you do a re-take on the vocals think speaking it more then singing in the verses especially, if that makes sense. Less legato, hit the pocjket with the vocals more ryhtmic like the groove...
I think the solo leads could come up a bit and the vocal a smidge...
Nice pitch on this one Stan your singing has really come along... Awesome sound here!

Tom LOL you know I haven't used a virtual track once yet... There's typically quite a few left on the board...

There's typically quite a few left on the board... Too bad you can't lend a few of the extras to those of us who have to make do with just 4. Tom
