Time for a little test ?
Just to see if you can hear a difference in “recording quality” between 24bit and 16bit, and 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz….
I did 4 different recordings of a very easy and quick little thing, trying to do it each time as identical as possible (same tune, same instruments, same settings, same number of tracks, etc…), and I mixed each one separately as identical as possible (very little FX, and if there is, it’s the same in every recording & mix, etc…).
The different mixes were “mastered” (without any mastering EQ or FX, and without any “normalising” or whatever : it’s just the mix, really) to the internal CD-R of the Korg D3200. With the pieces recorded 24bit, I had a choice before exporting the mix to CD : dither or not. I made a version of both.
So, this resulted in 6 different pieces, the differences being :
• one is recorded 16bit 44.1 kHz
• one is recorded 16bit 48 kHz
• one is recorded 24bit 44.1 kHz (not dithered before exporting to the CD)
• one is recorded 24bit 44.1 kHz (dithered before exporting to the CD)
• one is recorded 24bit 48 kHz (not dithered before exporting to the CD)
• one is recorded 24bit 48 kHz (dithered before exporting to the CD)
On my PC, I ripped the CD files to WAV’s, and I put the six files one after the other (but in another order than here above) in one WAV called LOOK HEAR (about 4 minutes and a half long).
The six pieces (about 45 seconds each) in the file have a code name, and they are in this order in the LOOK HEAR file :
BETTE BRAD JACK JOHN MARY PAUL
Without paying too much attention to differences in volume (the files were NOT normalised) and/or to the slight differences in playing and in the mixes (I’m not a machine, these are all different recordings and separate mixes), and/or to the musical quality of the piece (it’s crap), just test your ears, and try to figure out which is which.
I’ve put the “solution” in a pdf-file “SOLUTION”. No cheating please : only look at the solution AFTER you decided which is which.
This is the LOOK HEAR file : www.sendspace.com/file/tz7ei8
This is the SOLUTION file : www.sendspace.com/file/xvd7s6
Enjoy !
