Hey Stan
What a cool song, this one was vaguely familiar to me. I must of heard it somewhere down the line. Really enjoyed the performance and as you said the rawness of it all, felt like I was in the room with the band. I have a couple thoughts on the mix.
There seems to be a bit of harsh frequencies in the Acoustic Gtr and more so on the verse vocals which I think could be tamed or rounded out a bit. Probably in that 800-3000Khz if i had to guess... The chorus vocal feels real nice to me. I like that vocal effect you have, going from that lo fi sound in the verse to a nice open chorus.
I think I'd try adding a bit more bass and kick to the mix, I lose the kick at times. The bass could come up to really add support to the chords. Not sure but a little definition on the bass, boosting a couple dB around 250 hz might help to give definition to the fundamental notes. Maybe carve a little bass from around 80-120hz for the kick drum to have some space in there. Thats where I would start anyway.
I really dig this song a lot. Your performance is a lot of fun to listen too. I think the vocal performance and guitar work is strong while still retaining that rawness. Just a bit of mud holding this one back. It's such an enjoyable track I'd love to hear a few tweaks
Good work, much enjoyed.

Yeah I was so busy creating all of this from scratch that I didn't refine anything. Thanks for the tips. I took a lot of processing off of the verses and tried to create more room like you suggested.
Thanks for listening and the tips.

From Cam's suggestions I can tell the low end has been worked on. There's plenty of bottom in the mix, and the acoustic sounds nice and clear at the beginning. I still hear that lo-fi quality in the vocal, which always confuses me, since I know you've got a very good vocal mic. Other than perhaps a touch more snare (just a smidge!), that's the only thing that really sticks out. Good strong solo; I wish I could play like that.

Nice! The acoustic and lead vocal is really sounding nice.. Kick and bass are definitely improved too, I believe I hear the bass fundamentals more now and the kick is easier to make out.
Wow I just listened to the original. Stan your vocals are really good, honestly I love the character of your voice. Your voice lends a weight of experience to the song that Eli Young can't, it kinda gives the story a difference context. Good cover!

I always appreciate the encouragement, tweaks, and suggestions here on this forum! Without them I would still be posting lots of lame stuff. I got the snare up and tried to fix that low vocal part Mike was talking about.
I don't know if any of my relatives will like it since they are from Oklahoma and anti-Texas (lol). But I was born in Texas and spent almost half my life here so the song does have some truth to it. But the Okies still claim that I'm an Okie and they are right. It's only a song storyline & not a betrayal. hahaha.

Yup, much improved; snare cuts through better, vocal sounds less like a taxi microphone.
And I agree whole-heartedly with Cam; the texture of that vocal is one I've grown to enjoy over the years. Yeah, you'll always sound like Petty, but nowadays I think it's fair to say Tom sounds more and more like you.
