It's another one of those Jason Aldean country covers that I love to do. I really don't know what to think about this mix. I put lots of hours into it but seem to be chasing my tail. Should I leave it alone or not leave it alone? I left one midi track in but I can still tell it's midi but don't know if it adds or subtracts. soundcloud.com/theirishtexan/tonight-looks-good-on-youStan

I think there are a lot of good things happening in this mix. It has a lot of mystery, which I always enjoy hearing in a track. Some very subtle parts half-buried and poking through occasionally. Good stuff.
But (and here it comes), the mix as a whole has almost no treble; it's a lot of mids, which makes it sound like it's coming through a small transistor radio. The panned guitars (picked on left, chords on right) have no "oomph" behind them. The bass is a murky thump and the vocals sound like they were telephoned in. My suspicion is that the whole thing is over-compressed, squeezing the life out if.
How much more work you want to put into it is up to you. If it was an original, I'd say dump the mix and start over again. But a cover? Ehhhh....

Well this song is attracting 10X my normal plays/DLs for some reason so I redid the mix since this is the newest popular song of his.
Thanks for the advise Mike. It always helps for comments after all of the recorded tracks and then mixing. It almost messes up the ear when it comes to details when hearing a large/long amount of sounds flooding in.

Yes: I try to hear the mix on different devices, and to take my time. How does it sound today as compared to yesterday? It's important not to fatigue the ear.

Hey Stan,
I always miss out on the first mix lol... Ya this track does have a cool mysterious vibe to it! I really like that.
If I am to critique this mix:
I'd say it could use one or two of the elements panned more to the right, to balance the left main guitar riff. I'd probably use the acoustic guitar to do that... Seems to be something distorting a bit in the vocal perhaps too much compression. It's got a lot of bite but could use more air. I feel that the Kick and Bass are fighting for a lot of the same space where it thumps. It's a pretty big and roomy kick sound.
I like it a lot. You could definitely get it more polished but is it needed? I'd say only if you really want to. It's pleasant enough to listen to and a cool vibe-y performance. Well done!

Good Suggestions Cameron! I took most of the effects off of main vocals and balanced the acoustic guitar as you suggested and then gave some airy fx into the low-level harmony track on the chorus parts which opens it up better. This was not one of my easier mixes to say the least.
Thanks you guys for listening and both of your inputs.

That is working much better! Bass and kick seem more distinguishable too. Nicely balanced, it's cool with all the elements bouncing on both sides of the stereo spectrum now. It even feels like it has more depth now. The lead guitar bits are really sounding great. Vocals sound much more open, the chorus sounds really awesome! Enjoyed this remix! My pleasure Stan... Glad to be of some use lol..

OK, I'm tweaked out after 6 days but so I post my last attempt. As always, you have both been a great help. I always need a nudge after my 1st couple of mixes. They never seem to be quite right; maybe due to my old ears with all the old hairs growing in them.
