just one of the quick ones.. started writing yesterday.. finished today at work (lyrics) ..did all the instrumentation tonight between 6 and 11pm im pretty happy all around.. probably singing is the weekest link in this one.. i dont know what key this is but parts of it arent natural for me so as sorta difficult in places. cam i noticed what you were talking about descending vocal lines and ascending.. i now know what you mean i dont know anything about singing really.. this song has a couple ascending vocals though it just seemed natural for the passage.. drums seemed to be not bad (comparing to myself from previously, not to ginger baker) except snares a touch loud which forced me to lower drums a tad more than i wanted to in mix.. ill note that nextime recording and lower my snare/hats mic volume on the mixer. im starting to hear the difference between small amounts of eq which is very cool and i think shows.. can you guess which guitar i used? theres a fake synth bassline in there.. faded back probably too much... if anyones interested in bass im always happy to let you fulfil your interest. i had no idea how fun it could be coming up with riffs/chord progressions/trasitions/etc.. never spent much time on it before.. granted im not doing like what charlie just did but certainly mnore than i used to fun fun.. nice to listen to a not so bad song and know i made it!! on soundclick. if anyone (regular crowd) wants a mp3 when its done (if i get bass) send me a pm.

Matt, Really good job!, and yes the drums were really tight in this one. What I heard at the beginning of your riff was an "America" sound. Hey, I love "America" the band and the country (ole man joke) Maybe a bridge part could be wedged into a couple of places but still a great song without it. Lyrics were fabulous as usuall. Really good songwriter. Stan

yeah this one is another special. but sounds much tighter than usual, the beat between the guitar and drums really pumps sweetly....oh! just caught that echo u stuck on the end!! cool tune. not sure if bass is needed, but if it is then hope it sits ontop of the bass line that the guitar is doing, so that you keep that pump going. (hmmmm [scratchin chin] food for thought ...[eyebrow raised] let me see if i can use that sparse pump thingy idea he's got going there!!)

yea if i do get a bass ill haveta eq the qtr down or something.. .. i have a bassline in it but its waaay faded back. i tried before mixing \with the guirtar alot lower and the bass.drums louder and that worked too.. but the bassline kinda stinks so i decided to fade it back. it really requires thinking lkike a bassplayer which im not to familiar with im not sure theres anything different about the rythm rob? this is essentuially what im always doing.. ?? maybe it just came out better, thanks yea stan its a touch too long with only the 2 chnages for interest i guess.. i probably at the leats should have lopped off the extra meaure after each verse (that i put in there for some opportunity for gtr fills..

maybe you're right, same stuff, it just sounds so much more clear and punchy.

im really liking the current mix mike but its lacking in hi end eq ranges-- ill haveta remix with either more treble on gtr or the hats.. likely the guitar not sure id like what the louder hats would do to the song. i think once i fix that..
i wish the ps5 had a way to save track volume levels digitally.. that is truly a pain for the recording engineer novice to dial in just the right volume levels

That's one of those things that probably make you better in the long run. I remember a recording engineer telling me once that when he was training newbies, he would never let them assign inputs to the same track numbers (like the PS5, you could route the input to any track). So input #1 couldn't be assigned to track #1, and so on. With 24 tracks, it can be a lot more confusing than just 4.

Nice groove, and I like the string-like wash in the background. The single note organ I'm not as crazy about; it seems a little loose in places. Tempo-wise it seems very close to the other recent songs.
Let me put a little pressure on you Matt - I know you throw these songs together almost on the spot, then spend endless hours tightening up the parts. Where are the songs that you spend hours writing? Without throwaway lyrics? The ones I assume all these 'practice' songs are for? Those are the ones I really want to hear.
