Another great Bob Vincent tune! Nice song and good well balanced mix. I assume you did this on your 2488? Jim

Hi Jim,
Thanks very much! I don't know about "great", but I try my best. Yes, this was actually the second one on the 2488, and the first that wasn't begun on the PS5. The other 2488 tune, "Little Thing Called Rock and Roll" started on the PS5, I ported the pattern over to the 2488, and completed it there. In fact, Al does one heck of a good vocal on that one. This one was my first go at using the 2488's patterns - the nice thing is that if you're comfortable with the PS5 pattern, the transition is nearly transparent. The big difference is that the 2488 has only drums - no other voices, as the PS5 does. So, if you want to hear keys in a part, you wait till the kids are in school, commandeer their Casio, and off you go! ;D Thanks Jim!

Hey Bob I'm really looking forward to hearing this. Sound Click revamped its pages, and I can't get anything to load over there right now.
(should be getting a 2488 in my hands in less than a month)
Thanks for all of your help, and get back to SC a try again sometime today if possible.

Hiya Stan,
Congrats on the 2488! I think you'll find it a natural extension of the PS5, which will help to minimize the learning curve. One thing that I'd suggest is to download and read Double's guide to the 2488 (over on the other forum), if you haven't already done so. The couple of areas that are foggy in the manual are cleared up nicely in his guide. The song - "Midnight Train" is the second one I've completed on the 2488 - the first was "Little Thing Called Rock and Roll". Little Thing was actually started as a PS5 project, and so I brought over the TG drums from the PS5 to the 2488. Train was the first outing working with the native 2488 TG. Fortunately, when I went to the screen to program the pattern, I felt right at home...just like the PS5! The big differences - as great a sound as the PS5 is capable of, you'll like the 2488 better. Where the PS5 tracks are actually MP3's, and therefore compressed, the 2488 tracks are not only uncompressed, but are a higher bitrate than even commercial CD's (24 bit vs. the standard 16 bit). And the best part, at least for me - no need to bounce tracks to make room. This leaves you with full options at mixdown, instead of having to go with a pre bounce, just to free up tracks (not to mention the slight loss of quality in a bounce). I love having more tracks than I need - the elbow room to put down alternate takes, to add different effects or EQ to dry tracks - very versatile! I think you'll hear the increased clarity when you get to hear the tunes - one minor setback, however - I still haven't found the button or fader to make a poor vocal good!!!!! Should you have any questions whatsoever when you kick off your 2488 journey, please feel free to give a yell - either here, the other forum, or by email. I'll be happy to point out the discoveries I've made so far to help you off to a smooth start!

Bob,
It was sure worth the wait! The SC site is much better now that it is functional again. Mightnight Train was great. The clean Stratty guitar sound and great EQ seperation. Nothing was masked-down and all instruments were heard clearly in the mix.
I guess your MP3 rip off the high-quality master held on very nice as well.
Very enjoyable tune. Are you producing an album? DiscMaker, as mentioned earlier, is a good place to do 10, 50, 100, or 500 quantities without closing out your bank account by producing 1,000, not to mention filling up an entire room full of jackets and CDs.
Man, I'm really appreciate the 2488 support. I'm getting really pumped now that I heard this tune.

Thanks Stan - I love the sound of the Strat, and it really shines through when you give it just a touch of presence! As to an album, I don't know actually - I've made numerous compilations of tunes old and new here, but always given them to the band and friends. I'd have to think about whether or not to produce a quantity of discs. Who knows? For now, I'll just continue enjoying letting all these ideas inside make their way out onto the tracks!

Bob- Nice performances throughout, nice clear mix. My only bone of contention is the amount of reverb on the vocal tends to place it behind the guitar, sonically. I'd like to hear it a bit more 'upfront'. Otherwise it sounds pretty good. I'm going to look at revamping some of the boards here when the forum is shut down for the upgrade - I'm wondering if a place for PS5 "graduates" would be a good idea. A place for all these upcoming 2488 mixes.

Thank you Mike. You're right - the vocal is still something I tend to hide somewhere in the mix. Ideally, I'd like to get a strong vocal in this piece. I think that would make the song. I'd love it if there were a place here for those of us who have begun work on the 2488, but have not turned our backs on the PS5. It seems such a natural progression, it almost makes me wonder if Tascam hadn't planned it that way? If so, kudos to them on a good marketing plan, and good engineering to bring it to fruition!

Mike, With your experience in recording and mixing, you could open a more generic form of this website which would apply to all general home recording questions and critics, as well as mix & match collaborators based on recorder type (collab folders for each popular type of digital recorder) Just a thought. With a few meta-tags and some exposure I would think forum membership could really grow. A lot of people are getting 4 and 8 track digitals these days. I've noticed on the Tascam 2488 forum that topic discussions & conversations are really low, and that just the general questions about the 2488 are all that usually get posted. Bob, Vocals are a real problem for me. I'm only considering the market place as an avenue for a few vocalists that I know that are good. My songs will never go any futher than the friends circle. It is a great hobby for me so mixing improvement and experience in mastering is what I will be striving for. I may never get there, but I'm going to have fun doing it. Stan Stan

Stan, there are so many forums now devoted to a wider range of recording that I don't know what one more could offer. I think the PS5 will need a home of its own for quite some time yet, and I'm happy to provide it. I'm at the other TASCAM forum every day, reading posts, and they do such a good job there it's probably better if we stay out of each other's way. But I know a lot of people who have PS5's and other machines (like Latmat & Bob with their 2488's), so maybe a little separate space here could be devoted to promoting their new creations. I have a bunch of 788 tunes that I've never mentioned here because the only PS5 link is the drums. So it would be for my personal benefit as well. There will be lots of little changes when the forum is shut down for the upgrade. Some from Proboards, some from me.

Stan, I know exactly what you mean about vocals - I started a project this afternoon to help a friend with his new material, and when I showed him some of my work, he asked me "Is there anything you don't do?" .... to which I immediately replied, "Sing!" Mike, I agree - what you have here is a wonderful unique community, which not only helps new users, but provides a comfortable atmosphere within which to foster growth on its users part. I don't think you should expand to become a mirror of the other forum at all. To provide a place to mention work that's been done as an extension of the PS5 would be terrific, but other than that, I'd not want to see this community change too much at all. Just my 2 cents.

I really haven't visited too many recording sites except this one so my suggestion was only based on what I've visited. I still haven't seen many collaborations going on but that doesn't mean they are not around. I've been here since Mike first started this forum, and since there is such excellent support here, I see no reason to hang out elsewhere. So no matter what new formats take place I'll still be around.

I will as well Stan - there is a lot of knowledge and technical help on the other forum, but I don't get nearly the same sense or feel of "community" as I do here. Going there is like sitting in a library and reading a book. Being here is like sitting at home in your overstuffed recliner reading a book. And me....I'm very partial to that recliner of mine
